Kolbe

At Auschwitz as we moved deeper and deeper into the camp, we eventually came to a building especially dedicated to death and torture: interrogation rooms, a courtyard in which people were shot, starvation cells, and cells into which prisoners were shoved and then bricked up. In this center of the horror we found the cell of St. Maximilian Kolbe. His holiness, his being love here in the midst of this, the presence of Christ in him - I felt none of these things there. It would have been a kind of consolation. Later perhaps. It was enough to mark the place, to stand there where he died and to try to remember why.
